Reflections by Nabil (pseudonym): Bridging Divides Through Dialogue

December 19, 2024

This experience was unlike anything I’ve had before. While I’ve had brief interactions with Israeli colleagues in the past, this was the first time I spent an extended period engaging with them on such a deep level. Over the course of our time together, we discussed a wide range of topics, including ones that are often considered too sensitive to address. It was different—challenging, but also transformative.

What struck me most was how these conversations, particularly about difficult topics, led to a deeper understanding between us. We didn’t just talk; we truly listened to one another. It fostered a sense of acceptance, a willingness to continue the dialogue, and perhaps most importantly, a realization that such conversations are possible. This experience gave me confidence that I can carry these discussions forward, even outside the group, whether with Israeli colleagues in hospitals or in other contexts. Now that I better understand their perspectives, I feel more equipped to approach these conversations with openness and clarity.

One thing that surprised me was realizing how little they knew about the Palestinian narrative. I had assumed they would have more information, but it became clear that there were significant gaps in their understanding. Through our discussions, we were able to clarify things for one another—about the Palestinian story and the Jewish story. That process of sharing narratives together was powerful. It showed me that if we each take what we’ve learned and share it with those around us, it could have a ripple effect, leading to better understanding and maybe, one day, to peace.

On a personal level, this experience has changed me profoundly. Perhaps the most significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of listening—really listening. It’s not just about hearing words but about trying to see the story through someone else’s eyes. That perspective, that shift in understanding, has planted something in my mind. It’s not a change that happens instantly; it’s a process, something I’m still reflecting on.

I believe programs like this hold incredible potential. They create opportunities for people on both sides to meet, to talk, and to dismantle the barriers that have been built over decades. If more people had access to these experiences, it could lead to a better future—a place where people on both sides have the opportunity to live in peace.

There’s something powerful about spending time together informally, too. Beyond the structured discussions, we got to know each other as people, sharing meals, stories, and laughter. It humanized the “other side.” For me, it was an opportunity to challenge the narratives I’ve heard and to help them understand more about the Palestinian experience as well. I think this mutual exchange is essential. To truly understand one another, we need to complete the picture—to share our stories in their entirety.

If I had to choose one memory to take away from this week, it would be meeting everyone at the airport. There was so much joy in that moment, so much hope. It felt like a small but meaningful step toward something greater.

Looking back, I am grateful for this experience. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. And I hope it’s just the beginning of something that can grow and expand, helping others understand and build connections as we have. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this journey.
