Peacebuilding and Education: A New Era for Rozana

In response to the escalating conflict, Rozana has launched a comprehensive peacebuilding and education initiative aimed at fostering resilience and collaboration among healthcare professionals. This groundbreaking program, known as "personal and professional leadership development," begins with the well-being of local nursing teams, progresses to conflict resolution within diverse Israeli teams, and culminates in peace education and leadership training for select nursing leaders.

National and Binational Components

Healing the Healers: Rozana has conducted multiple workshops focused on supporting senior nurses. Guided by psychologist Assaf Shani, we held four sessions at Sheba Hospital and Herzliya Medical Center (HMC), two at Al Ahli Hospital, three at Al Makassed, and one for the Women4Women team, delivered by Dr. Abed Al Kareem Asherah. These workshops addressed conflict mediation, ethical dilemmas, and managing both patients and colleagues. Participants highlighted the significance of addressing the unique challenges faced by nursing staff and the necessity of providing them with robust support systems. We plan to extend these workshops to additional hospital partners, ensuring a wider impact.

Conflict Resolution and Racism: In collaboration with aChord – social psychology for change, Rozana has developed a course designed to resolve internal conflicts within diverse Israeli nursing teams. This course, set to begin in September, aims to foster dialogue, promote understanding, and enhance cooperation among team members. It will include practical exercises in mediation and conflict resolution strategies, providing participants with tools to navigate and resolve disputes effectively.

Peace Education and Peacebuilding: Dr. Samuel Schidem, Executive Director of Rozana Germany/EU, has joined our nursing project to spearhead the peacebuilding component. Dr. Schidem's work centers on enhancing the understanding of the historical narratives of the Nakba for Israelis and the Holocaust and Jewish displacement from Arab countries for Palestinians. By exploring how these histories shape identities, we aim to build empathy and mutual respect. Collaborating with peacebuilding workshop facilitators Michal Levin and Saber Rabi, Dr. Schidem is developing lecture content and conducting workshops, including a pivotal session in December in Switzerland.

Innovative Nursing Hackathon: Instead of our traditional end-of-year conference, Rozana is hosting a nursing hackathon in November, facilitated by MEPPA grantee Tech2Peace. This innovative event will bring together 15 Palestinian and 15 Israeli nurses for an intensive study process starting in September. The hackathon will culminate in a day of marathon meetings where participants will present solutions to real-world medical challenges. This unique approach encourages creative problem-solving and collaboration across cultural divides.

AMEE Conference Presentation: Rozana has been invited to present an interactive poster at the AMEE (International Association for Health Professions Education) conference in Basel, Switzerland. With approval from USAID, Luke Atkin, Program Director, will represent Rozana at the conference, while Maya Arnon, Medical Director, will participate online to answer questions in real time. This prestigious opportunity allows us to showcase our innovative approaches and share best practices with an international audience.
