Palestinian-Israeli Specialist Nursing Hub – expanding our impact with new partnerships

In response to the evolving situation in the region, Rozana has broadened the Palestinian-Israeli Specialist Nursing Hub initiative to include allied health professionals and engaged new partners. We are excited to welcome the Palestinian Red Crescent in Jerusalem and Hebron, Al-Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian Diabetes Association, Green Land Society for Health Development, and Herzliya Medical Center (HMC) into the Palestinian-Israeli Specialist Nursing Hub  network. This expansion is crucial as it allows us to address a wider range of healthcare needs and strengthens our capacity to deliver comprehensive healthcare services across the region.

Clinical Education Initiatives

Herzliya Medical Center, a private hospital Iocated in central Israel, is now authorized to offer certified courses in Advanced Cardio Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) in both Arabic and Hebrew. There is a significant demand for these courses from our Palestinian hospital partners, and Rozana is developing educational responses to meet this need. A senior nurse from HMC will join our personal and professional development course, focusing on peacebuilding and education. This collaboration, facilitated by Rozana Israel Board Member Dr. Eric Sitton, underscores our commitment to enhancing medical training and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Intensive Care Training at Al Ahli Hospital, Hebron

Following post-war restrictions on clinical experiences in Israeli hospitals, Al Ahli Hospital in Hebron created a comprehensive training program inspired by the successful model at Assuta Ashdod. This initiative prepares 40 recently graduated nurses to join the expanded ICU department, addressing the growing demand for skilled ICU nurses. The program includes weekly theoretical lectures and hands-on sessions, emphasizing peer education. This approach not only enhances the skills of individual nurses but also contributes to building a sustainable and independent Palestinian health system.

In Q2, we developed medical simulation training modules for Al Ahli at Ben Gurion University's Medical Simulation Center (BGU), with the program set to launch in late July. Ten nurses from Al Ahli Hospital will participate in a clinical guidance training course at BGU. This training will provide them with the skills to build an intensive care training program for new graduates. Additional medical simulation courses in infection control and NICU will take place at BGU through July and August. These training programs are pivotal in ensuring that Palestinian healthcare professionals are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge, ultimately improving patient care and health outcomes in the region.

Diabetes Educators' Course

In collaboration with Sheba Medical Center and the Palestinian Diabetes Association, Rozana is developing a diabetes educators' course for doctors, nurses, and health professionals. Adapting Sheba’s curriculum to meet local needs, the course will be delivered in Arabic online, starting in September. The Women4Women team will also participate. This initiative is vital as it addresses the growing diabetes epidemic in the region, providing healthcare professionals with the tools they need to manage and treat this condition effectively.

ECMO Training at Sheba Medical Center

Dr. Ruba Rizik, our Al Makassed fellow at Sheba’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), recently completed an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) training course. Inspired by her experience, Dr. Rizik is determined to extend this training to other physicians and nurses from Al Makassed. We have organized for 16 nurses to join the course in September and engaged with the Peres Center to finance eight additional physicians.

The ECMO School will provide an in-person course for Al Makassed staff, including lectures, demonstrations, and practical training. This initiative will ensure the hospital has sufficient medical staff to maintain continuous ECMO coverage, standardising care and enhancing teamwork. By equipping healthcare professionals with advanced skills, we are improving the region's capacity to handle complex medical cases, ultimately saving lives.

Paramedic Training at PRCS Jerusalem

Recognizing the need to fully utilize their ambulance services, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in Jerusalem has initiated a call for paramedic training. During Q2, Rozana began onboarding paramedic candidates for our medical Hebrew language course, a prerequisite for professional clinical training. This training is essential for improving emergency response capabilities, ensuring that paramedics can provide high-quality care in critical situations.

Research Initiatives

As part of our nursing hub, Rozana is developing a study in collaboration with Al Ahli Hospital in Hebron and the School of Public Health at BGU. This study involves surveying groups trained at BGU and will serve as a pilot for further research. Wajdi Bkeirat, our Director of Research, is overseeing this important project. Research and evidence-based practice are at the core of Rozana’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes in the region. By sharing our findings and best practices, we aim to expand knowledge and drive innovation in healthcare in the region.
